Ben, this is a really good idea. I like the automatic countdown clock. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteAn idea for the visual display:
ReplyDeleteHave the schools design and fabricate the awards given at the awards banquet. The awards would be made out of recycled and/or sustainable material only. Each competing school would make enough awards for each first, second, third awards for the smaller competitions. (The awards for the canoe, bridge, and overall awards could be professionally done) The winning school with the most creative and well made awards would be the actual awards given out at the banquet.
There might be some limits on the size of the awards, just for ease of handling, but other than that, it could be fair game. We would also need to specify that these are of durable construction so the awards would not disintegrate or break while traveling back to the different universities.
This would really get the creative juices flowing for the schools AND it would save us a lot of money! Can't beat that notion.

The list of competitions has been updated with the lead faculty and lead student (if known at this time). This list will be updated as a continuing basis.
ReplyDeleteAn idea for the Mystery Competition:
ReplyDeleteJust have the same quiz bowl that we have for engineering week.
We could have it in Clement 212 and have the same buzzer set up. Dr. O'Connor from the Math Department loves the quiz bowl and maybe he would agree to being the host.
Most likely we could not reuse the questions from previous years, as it would give an unfair advantage to TTU.
Although some advantages would be that we already have the rules from E-week and all the equipment.
Thoughts?
Talking about a quiz for the mystery competition: A few ASCE members went to a Smyrna, TN sectional meeting last fall where they gave us a quiz at the end of the day for money awards. It was basically trivia (with an emphasis on math) and was pretty fun to take. We could get that quiz, if we don't want to use E-week's quiz.
ReplyDeleteAn idea for the professional paper:
ReplyDeleteThe topic could be Licensure: A Global Perspective.
-Review of current requirements for US, China, other major global players (obtaining new licenses and idea of reciprocity)
-Suggestions/hints/tips for streamlining process to design in China, India, other emerging and developing countries (obtaining new licenses and idea of reciprocity)
-Intra US (e.g. states in the US) and International reciprocity issues need to be covered as well
This was obviously a rough idea of what could be included.
Normally the professional paper's topic is chosen by the school, now with a similar topic, a more in depth scoring could be utilized. Also, it would be great to see what ideas would come from this. I personally do not know anything about international licensures, so I'm sure it would be a great learning experience for the participants.
An idea for Mystery competition,
ReplyDeleteHave a rockwall competition that includes some engineering in it. In the middle of the climb there would be a paper with a drop down pencil for the competitor to solve reactions for a simply supported beam, then at top have the same problem with the answers to the first problem and you have to draw the shear diagram. For each problem missed there would be a substantial time penalty so somebody couldn't just climb up and come back down. Requirements to tell students is that need to be at least a sophomore so that they have had statics.
